Resources / Practical guidance

Before
it drops.

A practical guide to roles, credits and written terms. Choose the stage you are at, then use the optional worksheet to keep your notes together.

01 / Three moments

Before recording.

Start the conversation while everyone can still make choices together.

  1. 01What exactly am I contributing to this recording?
  2. 02Who will own or control the recording, and what uses are planned?
  3. 03What payment, if any, has been agreed?
  4. 04Will my contribution be sampled, edited or reused later?
02 / Three moments

Before release.

Check the written record and the public credit before the track goes out.

  1. 01Is my name spelled as I want it to appear?
  2. 02Does the role describe what I actually did?
  3. 03Where will my credit appear, including release descriptions and metadata?
  4. 04Do the written terms match what we discussed?
03 / Three moments

After publication.

Keep a copy of the evidence and make corrections traceable.

  1. 01Can I find my credit on the published release?
  2. 02Do I have copies of my agreement, session messages and release details?
  3. 03Who should I contact if the credit or terms are wrong?
  4. 04What advice do I need from a qualified rights professional?
Keep the record

A name.
A role.
A written agreement.

These are separate things to confirm. This guide helps you prepare questions; it does not decide anyone's rights or replace advice on a specific agreement.
