01 / The purpose

Keep the sound.
Recognise
the maker.

Preserving a musical tradition involves the people who carry it. A recording can introduce an instrument to new listeners; a clear contribution record can also make the musician’s work visible.

PMRS brings those concerns together through five areas of work: documentation, agreements, credit, education and advocacy.

First, find
the musician.

It began in Amritsar with Aarush Singh Minhas looking for a musician who played the rabaab, a traditional instrument. That search became Unheard Amritsar, a project about traditional instruments and the people who keep their sound alive.

Recording those musicians brought a second question into focus. When a sound reaches an audience, can the people who made it find their names in the record?

PMRS grew from that connection between cultural visibility and contributor recognition. Its work begins with documenting contributions, improving credits and making the questions around agreements and rights easier to understand.

Unheard Amritsar and PMRS are distinct projects with a connected origin. PMRS carries that concern for visibility into the way contributions to Punjabi music are recorded and recognised.

Founder / Punjab Music Rights Society

Aarush initiated PMRS after his work with Unheard Amritsar brought the question of contributor visibility into focus.

That experience connects the campaign’s cultural starting point with its focus today: helping the people behind Punjabi music remain visible in the record.
